Looking for a Meetup alternative that isn't a room full of strangers

Meetup is good at scale. You can find a book event most weeks, in most neighbourhoods, and nobody has to know your name. That openness is the point, and for a lot of readers it's also the problem.

Mutuals starts from the other end. Instead of a public event you RSVP to, it's a small circle assembled for you: a handful of readers in your neighbourhood, matched on the books you actually reach for. One introduction, then the circle is yours.

A large, open events platform where anyone can host or join a public group on almost any interest.

The RSVP is the weak point

On an open platform, an RSVP costs nothing, so it means little. Forty people say yes, twelve arrive, and the group is a different group every month. It's hard to build a reading habit, or a friendship, with a rotating cast.

A matched circle asks for a small commitment up front and gives you the same faces in return. You're not auditioning a crowd; you're meeting the handful of people you were matched with.

What Meetup does that we don't

If you want optionality (a different event every week, no fee, the freedom to lurk), Meetup is genuinely better at that, and we'd point you there. Mutuals is a worse fit for readers who want to keep their distance and keep their options open.

We only do one thing: form a single small circle near you and step back. No feed, no calendar of events, no host to keep the lights on.

Straight answers.

Is Mutuals just a smaller Meetup group?

Not quite. Meetup is a public group you find and join; Mutuals assembles a private circle of four to eight nearby readers for you, matched on reading taste, and hands it over by email. There's no app or events feed to check.

Can I browse circles before joining, like on Meetup?

No. There's nothing to browse. You answer a short survey about what you read, and matching forms a circle around that. It's less like shopping for an event and more like being introduced to people you'd get on with.

Do I have to keep using an app to stay in my circle?

No. After the introduction email the circle is entirely yours: you decide where and when to meet. Mutuals steps back; there is no platform to log into and no organiser overseeing you.

Is Mutuals available in my city?

Vancouver is live, and Toronto is gathering signups now. The first circles are already meeting, and most neighbourhoods are still filling, so an early signup helps set the taste map for your neighbourhood.

A circle, not a crowd

Free to sign up and answer the survey. You only pay $15, once, on the day we match you into a circle.
