About Daisy Jones & The Six

In the 1970s, a rock band called The Six, led by Billy Dunne and his brother Graham, claws its way from Pittsburgh bars to a record deal in Los Angeles. Daisy Jones is a beautiful, reckless young singer from the Hollywood Hills who has been writing songs no one takes seriously. A producer puts them together on one track, and the result is so good that Daisy joins the band. Together they make one of the biggest albums of the decade. Then, at the height of their fame, they break up and never explain why. Taylor Jenkins Reid tells the story as an oral history, made from interviews with the band members decades later. They remember the same nights very differently. The format makes it a fast, gossipy read, and it is perfect for book clubs, because every member ends up siding with a different narrator.

Discussion questions for Daisy Jones & The Six

  1. The novel is told entirely through interviews, years after the events. How did the oral history format affect how much you trusted each person? Whose version of events did you believe most?

  2. Billy and Daisy are drawn together by their music long before anything else. Is their bond really about love, or about the songs they can only write together?

  3. Billy’s sobriety is the thing he guards most closely. How does the band, and Daisy in particular, put it at risk? Who is responsible for protecting it?

  4. Camila is often in the background of the band’s story, but she makes some of its biggest decisions. How did your view of her change from the beginning to the end?

  5. Daisy is talented, wealthy, and largely ignored by her parents. How does her childhood shape the way she approaches fame and men?

  6. Karen refuses to let anyone define her by her relationships or by what women are supposed to want. What did you make of her storyline with Graham, and the choice she makes?

  7. Some band members feel they never got credit for their part in the music. Was their resentment fair? What does the novel say about who gets remembered in a group effort?

  8. Drug and alcohol use is everywhere in the book. Did the novel glamorise it, or show its cost clearly enough?

  9. Reid wrote full lyrics for the band’s songs. Did reading them change how you understood the characters? Did you find yourself imagining what the music sounded like?

  10. Daisy’s friend Simone is a disco singer with a career of her own. What does her friendship offer Daisy that no one in the band can?

  11. When the narrator of the interviews is revealed, did it change how you read the whole book? Did you guess earlier?

  12. Is this a love story, a story about addiction, or a story about making art? Which reading did your club lean towards?

Themes in Daisy Jones & The Six

Memory and competing truths

No two people remember the same night the same way. The oral history format lets Reid show memory as something shaped by pride, guilt, and love. Readers have to assemble the truth from contradictions, and sometimes there is no single truth to find.

Love versus commitment

Billy loves his family and has promised them stability. He also feels a powerful pull towards Daisy, through the music they make together. The novel asks whether commitment is a feeling or a decision, and it gives Camila a surprisingly strong voice in answering that question.

Addiction and recovery

Both Billy and Daisy struggle with drugs and alcohol, and the band’s world makes them easy to find. Reid shows recovery as daily, unglamorous work, and shows how hard it is to stay sober when your job is to be on stage every night.

Women in a man’s industry

Daisy wants to be taken seriously as a songwriter, not just a pretty voice. Karen wants to be seen as a musician, not a girlfriend. The novel shows how the 1970s music business shaped what women could do and how they were remembered.

Daisy Jones & The Six ending explained (spoilers)

This section gives away the ending. Skip it if your club has not finished the book.

The band falls apart on tour in 1979, after a concert in Chicago. Billy and Daisy are close to acting on their feelings, but Billy chooses his family. A frank conversation with Camila helps push Daisy to leave the band and get sober. The Six never play together again, and the members scatter into new lives.

The book’s last twist is that the person who has been gathering the interviews is Julia, Billy and Camila’s daughter. We also learn that Camila has died before the book was finished. Knowing that the interviewer is family changes the meaning of many earlier answers, especially Billy’s. The ending leaves open what Billy and Daisy might be to each other now, and clubs often argue about whether Billy made the right choice.

Suggested book club format

  • Length: About 360 pages, roughly seven hours of reading. The interview format moves quickly.
  • Session count: One session works well for most clubs.
  • Icebreaker: “Which band or album defined a summer of your life?”
  • Moderator note: The book includes heavy drug and alcohol use, addiction, and an abortion. Name these at the start, and let people share as much or as little as they want. Many clubs pair the meeting with a playlist of 1970s rock.
